BTRC sets Dec 31 for deactivating individual's excess SIMs
Update Time: 6 Dec 2017 1:17 pm:
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has set December 31 as the deadline for the deactivation of individual's excess cellular mobile phone SIM cards.
"We've asked the people who have more than 15 SIMs against a national or any other ID card to deactivate the excess SIMs spontaneously by December 31," BTRC Chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood told BSS today.
To this end, a directive has been sent to the mobile phone operators, he added.
"If they (people) fail to comply with the directive, we will deactivate the individual's excess SIMs randomly," said the regulatory body chief.
However, the BTRC directive didn't mention the ceiling of SIM for corporate clients. So, any authorized person on behalf of an organization will be out of this ceiling for collecting SIM.
BTRC directives cautioned that after the deadline, there will be possibility of deactivating the necessary SIMs of an individual, if he/she does not deactivate the unnecessary SIMs by himself/herself.
Earlier on June 20 last year, BTRC had set a ceiling of 20 SIMs against a national ID, but later in August in the same year had fixed maximum five SIMs revising the previous decision.
Again on October 24 this year, the regulator revisited the decision and fixed the ceiling of 15 SIMs against a national ID.
According to the BTRC directives, the excess SIMs of an individual will be illegal after December 31. So, the surplus SIMs should be deactivated within the stipulated time by visiting concern operator's customer care centres.
Following two ways, customers can know how many SIMs has been registered against his/her national ID, passport, driving license or birth registration certificate.
In using USSD, a customer has to dial *16001# and then write last four digits of the ID number in reply.
On the other hand, a customer can send SMS to 16001 writing last four digits of the ID number.
In both USSD and SMS, the customer will be informed, through a return SMS, the number of SIMs of different operators registered against his/her ID.(BSS)
